EVENTS DIARY

img_0350Here are forthcoming courses and tastings we are involved in.  Why not book yourself a place and get more from your glasses of wine (and spirits too!).  You can bring family and friends, but many come on their own.  It’s a great way to make new friends and learn at the same time.

This page is frequently updated – don’t miss out, let us know if you want our email newsletter so you get the heads up on the local wine action.

Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Courses (via The Wine Shop Winscombe):

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

img_1110A one day course where you taste wines, pair them with food, learn your wine essentials and get a qualification from globally recognised wine and spirit educators WSET.  For trade and interested consumers alike, this is a fun way to learn what you need to know about wine.  There is a multiple choice exam at the end but you will be taught what you need to know to pass it on the course.  Unlike other versions of this course on offer, ours has the benefit of a gorgeous venue, free and easy parking, and a tasty lunch.  Sometimes bought as a gift experience, no knowledge of wine is needed.

Cost: £150

Next date: Sunday 10 February 2019

Venue: The Railway Inn, Sandford, Somerset

Tutor: Diana Lyalle BA (Oxon) DipWSET

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits

img_1106This course has two possible formats; 8 two hour evening sessions, or 3 days, plus at least 12 hours of home study.  You taste at least 30 wines, and learn about a wide range of wines from around the world focusing on the main grape varieties – both international superstars such as sauvignon blanc, and regional classics such as sangiovese.  You find out why wine styles and flavours vary so much, and learn the essential types and styles including sparkling and fortified (e.g. sherry and port) wines.  You are also introduced to the world of spirits (until August 2019 only – WSET has now created separate spirits courses).  No prior knowledge of wine is needed, but non-trade students usually benefit from taking Level 1 beforehand.  Despite lots of tasting, there is no tasting exam – only a multiple choice exam at the end.  Depending on the format and student numbers, courses are run either at The Wine Shop Winscombe and/or The Railway Inn Sandford.  Our last cohort of students all got merit or distinction and we have a 100% pass rate.

Cost: £325

Next date: Sundays 17, 24 & 31 March 2019 (3 day format with lunch)

Venue: The Railway Inn, Sandford, Somerset

Tutor: Diana Lyalle BA (Oxon) DipWSET

GO ORANGE! Charity Wine Tasting – Friday 1 February 2019 – Trinity Centre, Church Lane, Nailsea Tickets £20 (in advance only)

Inspired by local charity Luke’s Army, we are proudly going orange as part of the Go Orange appeal to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK, fighting muscle wasting conditions.

So for Orange Day, which is Friday 1 February 2019, we are embracing the “summer in winter vibe” by donning sunnies and orange attire and putting on a wine tasting to celebrate the brightest day of the year!  And we’re not just tasting wine – there will be a mid tasting quiz during which you can enjoy a scrumptious “orange” cocktail!  If that isn’t enough excitement, we will also be raffling a fantastic hamper kindly donated by The Wine Shop Wincombe!  Orange attire and sunnies for guests is of course optional 🙂 All proceeds will go to Luke’s Army.  It’s fun to fundraise!

Many thanks to all at Holy Trinity Church Nailsea for their help with this event.

NEW FOR WINE LOVERS IN/AROUND NAILSEA:

4 WEEK COURSE: “Wine Rivers of France” – Trinity House, Church Lane, Nailsea – Mondays 4/11/18/25 February 2019 7-9pm £95

Get your kayak out for a 4 week excursion – we’re off to explore France’s wine rivers!  In addition to tasting the wines of the regions, you will learn a bit of history, geography, agriculture, and even a bit of science!  The rivers we will explore are the Loire, the Dordogne and Garonne (Bordeaux), the Rhin and Saône (Alsace and Burgundy) and the Rhône.  No exams – although there might be a cheeky quiz to make sure you were listening and a “certificate” at the end.  We recommend that you bring along a bottle of water and something to cleanse your palate e.g. water biscuits.  The course fee includes:

  • Powerpoint presentations by Diana Lyalle DipWSET with relevant handouts
  • Tutored tasting of at least 6 wines each week with tasting notes
  • Use of ISO tasting glasses
  • Use of laminated tasting mat
  • Use of spittoons
  • Free parking
